• Character Personality:

— Loyal: Ashiya's relationship with Sadao Maou, the Demon Lord Satan of Ente Isla, is an extreme example of his sheer levels of loyalty and sets the stage for everything else that he chooses to do with his existence. It transcends the boundaries of allegience to Lord and Cause and verges closer to being fraternal in nature-- and this steadfast dedication to a person whom he firmly believes will change the world bolsters him through physical trials of illness and injury and emotional trials like being separated from his people and forced to act on his own throughout the series.

Even if he doesn't understand Maou's requests, like the insistence that they use their legal government names even in private, he trusts Maou enough to go along with nearly everything-- even if that means politely allowing their nemesis from their homeworld to take shelter in their humble apartment for a night. Beyond that, it's what allows him to work with people he would never have even considered before... and, in turn, extend that loyalty and thus the full degree of his participation and protection to them as well.

Beyond just fealty to his Lord, however, is a belief in his Lord's cause-- as well as a belief that the people he is loyal to will in turn be similarly loyal to him and have his back in times of need.

— Observant: As what appears to be one of the key strategists in the Devil's Army, Ashiya has had no choice but to be observant for a very long time. More than merely learning the patterns of people and war in Ente Isla, he had to learn the basics of being human with only his friendship with his Lord and a sense of curiosity at his side. While he is certainly the sort who will make the bold move without second thought-- like taking a strange meal from a law enforcement officer when he first arrived in Japan but still could not even speak the language-- he is also the sort who will step back and plan. His military skills were turned to the mundane matters of life in the modern world, like strategizing how he is going to make the most of their tight budget to pay the bills and buy groceries for the month.

While Maou is the one who quickly learned the local language and has the charm to succeed in the modern world, it was Ashiya who did the research and was able to see the points that Maou refused to look at for the sake of his dreams-- like how humans, a creature that needs food to survive do not look highly upon the people who provide them with that very food in the least. And, while his stealth could use a little work, he is keen to keep an eye on that which is important to him... even if it means tailing someone to make certain that they don't get into trouble.


— Cooperative: This is the key detail that makes Ashiya, as well as the rest of the Iron Scorpion clan, different from other demons from the land of Ente Isla. The Iron Scorpions on their own are not very powerful and, as such, found that they had a greater strength as a group than they would as individuals. Most demons prefer to act somewhat on their own and, before King Satan helped them find a way to live peacefully together, were unwilling to work with others at all.

This is also what ultimately makes Ashiya a General in the Devil's Army. He's very willing to cooperate with others, and his loyalty to the cause and his observation skills both put him in position to help facilitate this in others. Even though he doesn't agree with the presence of Emilia Justina in their lives at all, he is affably sarcastic with in his words while making moves to support her with his actions. It's his loyalty and ability to trust that reinforce this-- and he is able to make friendly associations with everyone from Emilia's coworker in the call center, Rika, to the executioner from the church who was sent to assassinate them all, Crestia Bel.

Whenever there's a problem that Ashiya knows he can assist with and there is nothing getting in the way of his loyalty and dedication to his people and his cause, he is more than willing to step in and do something about it. Even if the only way he can be of any help at all is by providing cooked food and a clean space to stay.... he'll do so, with minimal, if any, complaint.

— Judgemental: An unfortunate side effect to Ashiya's sheer levels of loyalty, duty, and dedication to his King and his King's Cause has led to him being rather judgemental of those who do not show similar levels of skill and fervor-- to the point of sassy and standoffish behaviors and manners when he's pushed too far. The most common recipients of this are the Hero, Emilia Justina, and his fellow General, Lucifer. With Emilia he frequently trades insults and comments about how she often acts more vicious and vindictive than actual demons, while Lucifer is frequently taken to task for his slovenly manner, lack of sense in regards to spending, and his willful uselessness in a crisis.

Most of all, however, he takes it out on himself for reasons that will be examined further below. He firmly believes that he should be able to do more in his role as General, tactician, adviser... and, most importantly, friend of the Demon King-- especially now that they are stranded on Earth together and he is unable to engage with the world in a way that is more meaningful than keeping a solid homestead for his King.

There is no shame in domesticity, but a part of him feels that he has in a way fallen. Especially after spending decades and centuries of looking at humans as meaningless and expendable in light of the grander picture his King was looking at.

— Prideful: It is ultimately Alciel's pride that is the reason for holding such deep judgements. He is proud-- to be a demon, to be a valuable asset to the Demon King, to be able to do his job and do it well. This pride is something that he clings to, even commenting on wishing that King Satan would continue to call him Alciel when it was just the two of them-- to which Sadao dryly commented "I wish you would just get over it."

It wasn't an unkindness, but a practical fact. As long as they were in Japan and unable to return to Ente Isla, it was foolish to cling to their old names and old identities.

Living and growing was about change. This was something Ashiya did ultimately end up learning.

This pride, however, is also why Ashiya still in many ways acts the same as he did in Ente Isla. He is fervent in his loyalty to Satan and his adherence to his duty, even if his relative uselessness in the modern world frustrates him time and again. Even when compared to his comrades from Ente Isla, it takes him the longest to engage with his power because he doesn't have access to alternate means like the others; Emilia and Bel both have their sources of Celestial Magic, which both Lucifer and Satan can tap into due to their angelic connections on top of their demonic traits. Alciel is beholden to only the traditional manner of demons collecting power: absorbing the negative energies of anger, fear, and the like in a region and using that as a catalyst for his power.

This was taken advantage of at his canon point, and he realized this too late.

— Stubborn: All of these traits boil down to a stubborn refusal to give in and surrender, even if there are simpler and easier options available to him. Nothing short of being shot through the chest will slow Ashiya in his duties to his King-- and even when functionally on his deathbed he is stubbornly clinging to consciousness to give a lecture about saving money and using coupons. He doesn't wish to be useless and will push through sickness so dire that it sends him to the hospital, and he doesn't like to rely on others for help if he doesn't have to.

Alciel is the Iron Scorpion at the foundation of King Satan's plans-- a rock solid foundation with an impenetrable hide and a devastating stinger to those who draw near. But... he is also Shiro Ashiya-- goofy, witty, and slowly learning that it's okay to accept help for himself and not just act as a tool for a plan greater than he is.

• Important Notes: Ashiya is a Scorpion Demon from a realm called Ente Isla who took refuge on Earth with his Lord, King Satan, and was subsequently forced to take a human form as a result. He still acts very much like he would as a demon, and he is not wholly aware of all of the limitations involved with being Human. For example: he was shook when he realized that humans only have one heart.

He's very intelligent and capable of analytical and critical thinking, but also easily taken to task by ordinary, human matters, and doesn't always respect his own physical limitations in regards to endurance, stress tolerance, and ability to eat foods that don't agree with him. If given access, he will devour and memorize every book he can find on foraging, bush crafting, and wilderness survival.

Also of note: In the context of Ente Isla, the demons draw their power from fear and chaos. In times when the right conditions were met in Japan, he was able to regain his Demon form and some manner of his magic for a limited duration. He is not all powerful... but he has the potential to be Strong Enough if an opportunity ever arises.

Until then, he will just be an overly fussy house husband who treats the mundane matters of life with the same gravity as waging war.
